Kierstin Parker - Union Mine High School – Winner of the Women in Engineering, Science and Math Scholarship

Kierstin is an outstanding student at Union Mine.  She is a classic scholar-athlete.  She is in the top 5% of her class academically.  She has been the Captain of the Varsity Volleyball team for 2 years and earned the Most Valuable Player award this year as well.  She is also the Student Body President.  She is a Student Representative at El Dorado County Board meetings and the Student Representative to the Standards and Instructional Leadership Team for the School District.  As one might expect her recommendation letters are stellar.

In addition, she volunteers at her Church as a First Grade and Kindergarten Sunday School teacher and as a Church Base Camp Summer counselor.  She has raised a Guide Dog for the Blind puppy taking her puppy Renny to the very last phase before he was “career-changed.”

Kierstin works for the Placerville Parks and Recreation Department as a Gym Supervisor for Youth Basketball and previously, as a Lifeguard.  It was this latter position that prepared her to perform initial lifesaving on a classmate’s father who was found unresponsive in his car in the parking lot at school.  Kierstin kept her head and got him out of the car and hooked up to an Automated External Defibrillator while others called 911.

Kierstin plans to major in Biomedical Engineering with the goal of becoming a Rehabilitation Engineer who designs prosthetics.  Her long term goal is “to be able to engineer these prosthetics at low cost so people across the globe can afford and have access to this new technology.”
