Soroptimist International of Placerville is thrilled to announce that we have awarded our annual Live Your Dream grant, a unique education award for women who provide the primary financial support for their families. Typically, one recipient is selected for the $2,500 award per year. This year, the Club decided to utilize a grant from the Lyons Foundation and increase the total awards to six, including five $1,000 grantees. We were overwhelmed by the response and wish we could have helped everyone but we are proud to showcase the six awardees:
Jessica Turnbull ($2,500 winner): Jessica is a single mother of one pursuing her Associate’s degree in Social and Behavioral Science at Folsom Lake College. Jessica hopes to continue her education to achieve a BA and possibly Master’s (go Jessica!) to ultimately work with young adults and help them to pursue healthy relationships. Jessica is passionate about sharing her experiences and helping others to avoid some of the challenges she has faced. We are so proud of Jessica and rooting for her!
Virginia Wilson ($1,000 winner): Virginia is a single mother of two pursuing her BA in Nursing at Folsom Lake College. Upon completion of her BA, Virginia hopes to achieve a Master’s in Science in order to ultimately become a midwife. Helping those in the community around her and supporting her family are Virginia’s priorities and we are confident that she will reach her goals! We are proud of you, Virginia!
Cassi Poreider ($1,000 winner): Cassi is a mother of two pursuing her Associate’s degree in Radiology at Folsom Lake College. Cassi has experience in the medical field and is excited to increase her skills in order to become an ultrasound technician, potentially focusing on the heart. Cassi is eager to embrace a career path that is rewarding and offers her the opportunity to support her family.
Beth Deruelle ($1,000 winner): Beth is a single mother of two pursuing her Associate’s degree in Nursing at Folsom Lake College. Upon completion, Beth hopes to transfer to Cal State Sacramento in order to achieve her Bachelor’s in Nursing. Beth has been challenged to care for her children and pursue her education simultaneously but she is dedicated to showing her children that perseverance pays off.
Emily Coleman ($1,000 winner): Emily is a single mother of two pursuing her Associate’s degree in Nursing at American River College. Emily graduated from the Folsom Lake College nursing program Magna Cum Laude and will complete her Registered Nursing certification in 2022. She lives by the phrase “You’re never too old to be educated” and is proud to become a nurse at the age of 40! We agree, never put your dreams on hold – we are proud of you, Emily!
Ashley Selby ($1,000 winner): Ashley is a single mother of one pursuing her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing at Folsom Lake College. Ashley hopes to ultimately become a labor and delivery nurse, potentially in the NICU. After admiring those who helped her deliver her son, Ashley decided that she wanted to have that same compassionate impact on others.
